Asclepias speciosa: Showy Milkweed is essential for Monarch butterfly conservation. Monarch caterpillars feed exclusively on this species after hatching, making it highly prized by egg-laying adults. The flowers are generously nectar-rich, attracting butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and countless other pollinators. Plants reach approximately 90cm (36") tall with greyish-green foliage topped by spherical clusters of pink flowers. Seed pods can be cut and dried for visual interest. Finches and redpolls also feed on the small seeds. This perennial spreads via self-seeding and rhizomatous roots, so it thrives in larger containers or areas where spreading can be managed through regular pruning. Remove seed pods before maturity to prevent unwanted self-sowing. Showy Milkweed is deer-proof and requires cold stratification to germinate. Sow indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, or direct sow in early spring. Space transplants 30-60cm (12-24") apart. Seeds germinate in 7-35 days at soil temperatures of 10-25°C (50-75°F).
Note: All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten. Flowers are not edible.
Average seeds per gram: 163.
