LILY oyster strain from the Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Technology Center at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science brood stock then bred at the Horn Point Lab Oyster Hatchery at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science under low salinity hatchery conditions averaging 10 ppt. The range is between 5 ppt to 15 ppt depending on the year.
- A low salinity stock
- with less disease tolerance,
- but good growth performance at low salinity.
- The ancestors of this stock are a composite of early mass selected lines with established disease tolerance that are now bred using family breeding techniques.
- Selection traits include fast growth,
- high survival,
- shell shape
-
and high meat shell ratio.
Diploid oysters are available to be used for marine restoration work and triploid oysters are most often used in aquaculture because they are sterile and grow faster.
Availability starts in July for the larger 6 mm seed.
