The introduced Kumamoto oyster is native to the northwestern Pacific Ocean.
- The Kumie oyster can be distinguished from Pacific oysters by its deeper left valve which has at least three radial ridges. Its right valve is flat but has grooves.
- The Kumo oyster is a slow grower, taking three years to reach market size.
- M. sikamea is known to hybridize with M. gigas in captivity.
- Natural reproduction has water temperature requirements of 24 °C to 28 °C / 75 °F to 82 °F.
- In its natural habitat, Kumamoto oysters are found on rocky shores and hard structures in the low to mid intertidal zone.
- Kumamoto oysters have been considered to have a fruity, melon like flavour, and have a moderate amount of meat in spite of their size, with a light brininess.
