Scientific name: Episyrphus balteatus.

The marmalade hoverfly, of the Syrphidae family, is widespread throughout the Palaearctic region and can be found in various habitats throughout the year visiting flowers for pollen and nectar. Episyrphus balteatus is among the very few species of flies capable of crushing pollen grains and feeding on them. They often form dense migratory swarms and is one of the migrating hoverflies. Adult E. balteatus, while not as efficient as honey bees, are significant and abundant pollinators. The larva is terrestrial and feeds on aphids. For this reason, E. balteatus is considered one of the main natural enemies of cereal aphids. In the wild, an E. balteatus larva can consume up to about 400 aphids before pupating.

Use for:

  • Biological control of all species and stages aphids
  • Disperses well and finds aphid hotspots.

Mode of action:

Adult hoverflies emerge from the pupae and deposit their eggs in the aphid colonies. The young larvae start feeding on the aphids.

Visually, aphids are consumed entirely, only skin remains. Dark excrements (meconium) on the leaves is an indicator of hoverfly larvae activity.

Releases should be repeated a number of times.
