Achillea millefolium var. occidentalis: A vital native North American wildflower and pollinator magnet that thrives in disturbed soil. Perfect for restoration projects around work sites, septic berms, and roadsides. This hardy perennial grows 25–90 cm tall with densely hairy, lacy fern-like foliage and delivers continuous blooms from May through September. Western Yarrow attracts beneficial insects including predatory wasps, ladybird beetles, and hover-flies; essential allies for any garden ecosystem. Highly drought-tolerant and deer-resistant, it excels in xeriscaping and erosion control applications. Seeds provide valuable fall and winter food for chickadees, finches, and sparrows. Sow indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow in early spring or autumn. Seeds germinate at 15–18°C and may take 10–100 days to sprout; patience and bottom heat help. Sow on soil surface under bright lights. Space transplants 30–60 cm apart. Yarrow adapts to most soils but prefers loamy, well-drained conditions with pH 5.5–7.0. Divide plants every 3–4 years and cut back to ground level in autumn.
Average seeds per gram: 6117.
