Scientific name: Macrocheles robustulus.

Macrocheles robustulus, found in New Zealand, is a species of the predatory mite family Macrochelidae. The majority of macrochelids are coprophilous, they live in animal dung, where they find an abundance of prey like oligochaete worms, nematodes and arthropod eggs and larvae, and shelter from the weather, other species occupy habitats such as forest litter, decaying plant debris, beach wrack or the nests of various animals. Dung is a temporary resource, melicharids therefore attach to insects like scarab beetles or flies to be carried to fresh dung deposits. Phoresis is used as a strategy for dispersal, but some macrochelids are parasitic on their hosts. Because of their predatory nature, some macrochelids like the species Macrocheles robustulus is commercially available as biological control agents of pest insects, such as flies and thrips.

Use for:

  • Soil dwelling generalist predatory mite.
  • Especially for the control of sciarid fly eggs, larvae and pupae, thrips pupae and Lyprauta larvae.
  • For optimal thrips control Macro Mite should be combined with generalist predatory mites like Amblydromalus limonicus, Amblyseius swirskii, Amblyseius andersoni, Neoseiulus cucumeris and/ or Orius spp..

Mode of action:

The predatory mites feed on larvae of sciarid flies, thrips pupae and other soil dwelling insects. The mites appear in and on the soil and at the base of plant stems. The reduction of the infestation level occurs at a slow but steady rate.
