Scientific name: Sphaerophoria rueppellii.

Sphaerophoria rueppellii is a species of hoverfly whose larvae are natural enemies of aphids. Adult hoverflies feed on nectar and pollen while their maggots eat a wide range of foods including decaying plant and animal matter in the soil, ponds and streams or prey on aphids, thrips and other plant sucking insects. The insectivore predatory larvae are used as biological control agents of agricultural pests and parasites. Adult syrphid flies are the second most important pollinators of flowering plants in ecosystems worldwide with their frequent flower visits.

Use for:

  • For the organic biological control of all aphid species.
  • Integrated pest management of all species and stages of aphids.
  • Disperse well and find aphid hotspots.

Mode of action:

Adult hoverflies emerge from the pupae and deposit their eggs in the aphid colonies. The young larvae start feeding on the aphids.

Visually, aphids are consumed entirely, only skins remain. Dark excrements (meconium) on the leaves is an indicator of hoverfly larvae activity.

Product specifications:

Pack size 100 pupae.

Dosage:

The dosage of Rophoria depends on climate, crop and aphid density and should always be adjusted to the particular situation. Start introduction preventatively or as soon as the first aphids are detected in the crop. Introduction rates typically range from 200 to 600 pupae per ha/release. Releases should be repeated a number of times.

Environmental conditions:

  • Rophoria is most effective between 20°C and 30°C.
  • High humidity is favourable for larval development and hatching of pupae.
  • Adult hoverflies feed on pollen and nectar. Ensure flowering plants are present for optimal establishment.
  • For effective control of aphids combine with other predators or parasitoids.
