Hydrangea macrophylla Hokomarore Elizabeth Ashley

Hydrangea macrophylla, endemic to East Asia, grow into large deciduous shrubs of rich foliage with big leaves and corymb inflorescences with florets ranging from blue to purple to red fuchsia to pale pink depending on soil acidity from pH below 7 acidic soil to above pH 7 alkaline soil respectively. Bigleaf hydrangea grows in seaside and mountain habitats and is partial to the shade of woodland gardens and plenty of water. French hydrangea forms flower buds for the next season in late summer so minimal pruning is recommended for most prolific flowering. Early summer to autumn blooming long lasting flowers make for excellent cut flowers.
