Haskin NEH® Oyster Seed ME

The Northern x Haskin NEH® oyster is a disease resistant genetic line of the Eastern oyster Crassostrea virginica developed by the oyster breeding program at the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory, Rutgers University.

NEH stands for NorthEast High survival.

Eastern oysters with improved disease resistance and growth:

• Selectively bred for MSX, Haplosporidium nelsoni, resistance since 1960,
• for Dermo, Perkinsus marinus, resistance since 1990
• and for growth and shell attributes since 1998.
• Haskin NEH® is derived from wild oyster populations in the Long Island Sound
• and perform well in most high salinity of 20 ppt to 34 ppt sites in the Northeastern region.
  
• This strain has strong resistance to MSX,
• moderate to strong resistance to Dermo
• and improved survival in the field.
• Widely used by farmers in New Jersey and Northeastern States where MSX and Dermo diseases are present.
• Adapted to hatchery production
• and grow significantly faster than wild Delaware oysters in the field.
