Iris x germanica Blue Suede Shoes

Iris x germanica occured as a natural hybrid of Iris pallid and Iris variegata crossing in the wild, hundreds of cultivars have been subsequently bred with some reblooming in the fall. The German bearded iris grows from rhizomes, preferring full sun and well drained soils. The best time to divide and transplant this iris variety is during the dry summer period post flowering. The beard is a row of fuzzy hairs at the base of falls petals that provide a landing place for pollinators and guides them to the nectar.
