Selected lines of disease resistant, fast growing triploid oyster brood stock from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science bred in the merroir of Gloucester, Virginia.
CROSBreeb or XB is a selectively bred genetic variety of Crassostrea virginica, the Eastern oyster, by the Aquaculture Genetics & Breeding Technology Center at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science from a line originating from a cooperative regional selective breeding program at Rutgers University, Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory, with the aim of directing scientific breeding efforts towards producing a more resilient and productive oyster for commercial farming.
XB is available as a sterile triploid, manipulated under contract with 4Cs Breeding Technologies, Inc., with the aim of the triploid oysters showing higher survival rates, faster growth and are more robust in the face of disease when grown in areas of high disease prevalence than their diploid counterparts under cultivation.
- Good all around oyster,
- seems to do better in higher salinities.
- Selectively bred to exhibit strong resistance to major oyster pathogens prevalent in the Chesapeake Bay region, specifically MSX (Haplosporidium nelsoni) and Dermo (Perkinsus marinus).
- Robust choice for aquaculture in areas where disease pressure is a concern.
- Good shell height and overall growth performance, depending on the specific environmental conditions.
Eyed larvae for remote setting or spat on shell operations. These eyed larvae are competent and ready to set, ensured by harvesting multiple times from each batch and finely grading them during each take down cycle. High performing larvae are produced during the entire growing season, with excellent setting rates throughout the spring and summer.
