The Atlantic surf clam, Spisula solidissima, is also known as the bar clam, hen clam, skimmer or simply sea clam. Spisula solidissima is a very large, edible, saltwater clam. The marine bivalve mollusk, in the order Venerida, of the family Mactridae, is one of the most commonly found species of bivalves in the western Atlantic Ocean.

Atlantic surf clams live buried in coarse or fine sand. They live offshore as well as in the low intertidal and surf zones.

Surf clams can take as little as three months to reach maturity as long as four years in colder climates.

Atlantic surf clams reproduce primarily in late summer when the water temperatures are around their highest. Reproduction occurs via external fertilization.
