Purple Passion Asparagus has sweet and tender spears and a higher sugar content than green asparagus making this a favorite of the home gardener and a connoisseur's selection. The deep burgundy color and tender texture is almost completely stringless (young spears are often eaten raw) Purple asparagus spears turn green with applied heat. Zones 3-9.
Roots are set 12-14" apart in a trench 6-8" below ground level in rows 4-5' apart. Initially covered with 2" of soil with the remainder of the trench being gradually filled throughout the rest of the year. Light cutting is possible the year after the bed is established. Take care in locating this planting as it could last a lifetime. Plant in a sunny to partly shaded location.
