This 1957 American Leslie Woodriff cross of Lilium henryi and Lilium speciosum Rubrum yields ten to fifty (as it matures over time) lightly fragrant, dark raspberry Turk’s Cap flowers edged in silver white with a central green star. A floriferous garden variety once established and mature. The butterfly beloved hybrid Lilium Black Beauty is best planted in the fall. It requires well draining soil that is not humus rich because it cannot tolerate wet feet. It prefers full to partial sun with its flowers and foliage in the sun, and its lower stalk in the shade. It likes it dry over the summer and hates any sort of root disturbance once planted. It may even hold off flowering the first year until it is well established.
