Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris is a very hardy vigorous woody vine hydrangea climbing by means of aerial roots up trees and rock faces. In horticulture, this hortensia can be grown up masonry walls, sturdy trellises, fences and as a ground cover for an area of up to 200 square feet/ 19 square metres. Prune back to a pair of buds to maintain structure as needed. Climbing hydrangea can tolerate dense shade and flowers profusely from early to mid summer in white. The flowers are used in bouquets, the young leaves are edible when cooked, often added to Miso in Japan.
