Black Oxford is a rare heirloom apple tree. Discovered around 1790 on a farm in Oxford County, Maine, the original tree was indicated in recorded to be still producing apples in 1907. The mid sized deep purple apples have a glossy black sheen when fully ripe. An all purpose apple variety truly superb for drying and cider, Black Oxford apples benefit from long storage, the sweetness enhances with the peak flavour for best raw eating comes by late winter. Black Oxford apple trees are slow to start bearing fruit and like many older varieties have a tendency toward biennial or every other year fruit bearing but show both insect and disease resistance.
