Hydrangea serrata is native to mountainous regions if Korea and Japan where the leaves are used to make tisanes. This deciduous shrub forms lacecap clusters of blue flowers in acidic soil and pink in neutral to alkaline soils. Mountain hydrangea prefers rich soil and shade, it tolerates full sun only if grown in consistently moist soil. The flowers occur on old wood from summer through autumn, little pruning is needed by cutting back flowering stems to a pair of healthy buds after flowering and weak or winter damaged stems in early spring.
