Propolis is bee glue, a resinous mixture made by honeybees from saliva, beeswax and resin exudates from botanical sources gathered from tree buds and sap flows to seal the beehive to protect the bee colony from weather elements like rain, pathogens, parasites and predators, to increase structural stability of the hive and to provide thermal insulation from cold winter drafts.

Beekeepers thus need leverage to pry apart beehive components to check on the hive, colony and queen health and to harvest honey, honeycomb, beeswax, propolis, ambrosia bee bread pollen and royal jelly.
