Scarlet Emperor Runner Bean

Large clusters of brilliant scarlet flowers and vigorous, sprawling growth make Scarlet Emperor an ideal choice for screens, trellises, and balconies. The long pods are tender and tasty when picked small. Grow up a tall, strong trellis and watch it reach 3m (10') or higher by mid-summer. The flowers are also edible, offering a delicious mild bean taste and making a perfect colourful garnish. In mild winter areas, undisturbed roots may overwinter and re-grow the following spring. Even if it doesn't return as a perennial, the large black seeds streaked with purple are easy to harvest and dry for future plantings.
