Prunella vulgaris ssp. lanceolata: A low-growing creeper that spreads slowly by seed and self-rooting habit. Edible leaves and flowers have been treasured in folk medicine for centuries. Small pink to purple flowers bloom early, providing essential pollen for butterflies, bumble bees, long-horned bees, sweat bees, and honey bees. Goldfinches feast on the tiny seeds after flowering ends. This hardy perennial thrives in Zone 5 and stays evergreen in south coastal BC. Plant in full sun in cooler gardens or partial shade where summers are hot. Drought-tolerant but keep soil moist during extreme heat. Cut back to ground after flowering. Perfect as a ground cover or lawn replacement; blooms even when mowed. Grows 5–30 cm (2–12") tall. Add to lawns or wildflower blends. Sow at 21–42 g per 1000 square feet or 2–4 lb per acre.
Perennial.
Average seeds per gram: 857.
