Ashmeads Kernel apple is an old English variety of unparalleled quality from the early 1700s. The flavour is described as an intense, aromatic sting of sharp and sweet, with hints of indescribable, but absolutely wonderful tastes and aftertastes in each bite by apple explorer, orchardist, pomologist and expert on American apples and their history, John Bunker. The small to medium apples are greenish yellow with heavy brownish russet skin and crisp, juicy yellow flesh. The heritage apple tree is a good, sharp addition to apple orchards for cider, great for apple sauce and eaten raw as dessert apples. Ashmeads Kernel apple trees show some resistance to scab and mildew. Ashmeads Kernel is a triploid apple variety and needs two different apple varieties that bloom at the same time for successful pollination and fruiting. The fruit ripens in mid to late October, store until New Year to reach flavour perfection.
Hardy down to zone 3.
Needs at least two different pollenizers.
