C-35 Citrange, a hybrid of Ruby Blood orange (C. sinensis) and trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata), is popular citrus rootstock seedling developed by the University of California, released in 1987.
- Dwarfing Capability: Typically produces a semi dwarf tree in the 10ft to 15ft range, roughly 15% to 25% smaller than those on Carrizo rootstock (averaging about 83% of Carrizo's size).
- Yield: Highly productive with excellent fruit quality. It often yields more fruit per cubic meter of canopy than other rootstocks.
- Cold Hardiness: Exhibits good cold hardiness and frost tolerance, largely due to its parentage from the deciduous trifoliate orange (Poncirus trifoliata), which is one of the most cold hardy citrus relatives. C-35 Citrange grows in USDA zones 7 to 9 and can survive in zone 6b with protection.
- Appearance: Known for its distinct trifoliate leaves; each leaf is composed of three leaflets, very thorny.
- Grafting: Seedlings are vigorous and typically reach graftable size within one year
- Soil Preference: Performs best in well drained soils like sandy loams. It does poorly in heavy clay or poorly drained soils.
- Disease Resistance: Highly tolerant to Phytophthora root rot, citrus tristeza virus (CTV), and citrus nematodes.
Additional growing time may be required to reach sufficient calliper for your preferred method of grafting.
