Lemon Eucalyptus, also known as Lemon-scented Gum, is a highly fragrant tree prized for its citrus-scented, lance-shaped green foliage and smooth grey bark. The refined extract from this plant, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE), is renowned for its effective natural insect-repelling properties, making it both functional and ornamental. This fast-growing, frost-tender perennial thrives in containers or garden beds and can reach 1.8–2.4m (6–8') in its first season. In its native Australian environment, these trees grow much taller, but container plants respond well to pruning for a manageable size. Deer resistant and suitable for indoor growing, it's an excellent choice for gardeners seeking chemical-free cultivation. Eucalyptus seeds require patience and precise conditions, they germinate in about 21 days at 18–24°C (65–75°F) and are best suited for experienced growers. Sow indoors 10–12 weeks before the last frost date. Once sprouted, provide bright light and good air circulation to prevent damping off. Plant in full sun with well-drained, moderately rich soil. Branches can be harvested for floral displays, dried arrangements, or preserved with glycerin.
A tender perennial that embodies regenerative gardening principles, grows vigorous, sustainable plants without chemicals.
