The DEBY genetic variety is a disease tolerant, all purpose Crassostrea virginica, Eastern oyster, strain developed for the York River, Virginia and similar environments, involving the Delaware Bay oyster line.
This strain was developed by the Aquaculture Genetics & Breeding Technology Center at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to
- improve oyster population resilience,
- bred for hardiness against common oyster pathogens and diseases like Perkinsus marinus (Dermo) and Multinucleated Sphere X (MSX).
DBY-H has been manipulated to be triploid under contract with 4Cs Breeding Technologies, Inc. , thus sterile, to render the oysters more robust in the face of disease, they show higher survival rates and faster growth than their diploid counterparts under cultivation.
Cultchless, disease resistant, natural triploid oyster juvenile oysters originating from brood stock selectively bred at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science then reared in Crocheron, MD to meet the needs of various regions and conditions and available in a range of developmental stages.
Oysters are bred for shape, size and disease resistance as well as a range of salinity. Commercial aquaculture farmers and oyster gardeners can pick the broodstock they desire to match their operations.
Nurturing care, state of the art technology and the most advanced grow out gear ensures that our oysters are raised in a healthy, consistent and fast growing environment.
Our eyed larvae have a setting rate of 15 to 20% with an average of 18 to 20%.
Available April through November.
