Camassia is a perennial plant in the asparagus family native to North America. Indigenous peoples Pacific Northwest have engaged in active management and cultivation the blue camas. Camas bulbs have been an important staple food for Indigenous people and settlers of the America Old West. The quamash plant grows in great numbers in the wild in moist meadows. While Camassia is nutritious and edible it should not be confused with the toxic Melanthieae which grows in the same areas.
