Currant and Gooseberry Plants - Groseilliers

Ribes is a genus of flowering plants native to temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere with approximately 200 known species known as currants and gooseberries. This plant is of interest to plant breeders to produce thornless cultivars amongst other characteristics. The plants are cultivated for their edible fruit rich in health benefits and as ornamental plants for their strikingly different leaves, flowers and fruits. The upright stems make for interesting cut flowers when their structurally interesting leaves appear in the spring. The flowers are an early source of nectar for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and various pollinators. The fruit is borne on clusters in appealing colours and the berries hold their shape for a long time on the plant even when they are very ripe. Culinary use includes jams, jellies, enticing garnishes, eating fresh, juices, tarts and sorbets.
