Ambrosia Apple

Ambrosia is one of the foremost commercial apples of today. The apple cultivar was an unexpected gift of nature when Wilfred Mennell of Keremas BC took out an old Golden Delicious orchard apple tree in the late 1980s and replanted it to pollinate Jonagolds apple, which is a triploid apple variety and needs two different apple varieties that bloom at the same time for successful pollination and fruiting. A chance seedling that turned up in the row attracted the pickers' attention when the plant began to bear fruit of remarkable flavour and the tree always got stripped clean for their own use. The crunchy and aromatic, honey sweet, low acid fleshed apples eventually reached the mass market to quickly became a favourite of many. Keeps from a mid October harvest until January.
