Frame spacing tools are used to accurately space beehive frames after honeybees have drawn the honeycomb foundation in the first year. Spaces between frames are subsequently expanded with consistent 0.25 to 1 inch or 6 to 9 mm distances to prompt bees to add extra depth to the existing honeycomb. This makes uncapping beeswax easier and quicker at harvest time and requires less effort to remove frames for hive inspections.
Too much space between honeybee hive frames will cause bees to fill the gaps with extra comb and secure empty spaces with propolis resulting in frames being stuck together and you may end up hurting your bees while attempting to get the frames out of the hive.
Adjust the space between honeycomb frames within a honey super during spring and summer rather than fall or winter to ensure bees do not have to work too hard to build the comb beyond the edge of the frame for warmth after space has been added.
