A polytunnel is designed to shelter plants from natural climatic weather elements thereby extending the growing season in temperate and sub arctic regions of the world with long cold winters. Passive solar heating by radiation maintains higher temperatures inside polyhouses  compared to the outside environment. Temperature, humidity, ventilation and irrigation can be influenced by manually opening and closing vents and watering or controlled and automated by adding mechanical equipment such as auxiliary heating, foggers, misters, fans and timed automatic drip irrigation systems. Grow tunnels allow fruit and vegetable crops to be cultivated during off seasons by commercial produce growers ensuring a year round supply of essential fresh food products. Cold hardy nursery plants are overwintered in hoop houses shielded from the wind in harsh climates and seedlings are allowed to mature in a protected environment out of frost prone areas that affect budding leaf shoots, flowers and young stems. Home growers can sow seeds earlier in spring in the microclimate of a high tunnel for an abundance of plants growing in the summer of short growing seasons to get adequate harvest in the autumn for winter storage contributing towards self sufficiency and organic agriculture. The warmer climate of a high tunnel provides a sought after sheltered space for cut flower growers to be able to produce ample plants sown early enough and aesthetic damage mitigation for a good harvest for the floral industry. Hoop greenhouses are further used to cultivate tender plants and annuals and set up hydroponics systems under highly optimized growing conditions.
