This LOLA oyster strain comes from the Aquaculture Genetics and Breeding Technology Center at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science brood stock then bred at the Horn Point Lab Oyster Hatchery at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science under low salinity hatchery conditions averaging 10 ppt. The range is between 5 ppt to 15 ppt depending on the year.
- A low to medium salinity stock,
- with moderate resistance to MSX
- and high tolerance to Dermo.
- Notable for good growth performance at low salinities.
- The ancestors of this stock come from Louisiana and have been hybridized to mid Atlantic lines.
- This stock exhibits fast growth,
- but less MSX resistance than others.
Diploid oysters are available to be used for marine restoration work and triploid oysters are most often used in aquaculture because they are sterile and grow faster.
Diploid oysters are selectively bred, disease resistant oysters made under license from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
Triploid disease resistant oysters are natural triploids produced under license from 4Cs Breeding Technologies, Inc.
Mature oyster larvae may be purchased to be introduced into your own setting system, so that you can produce your own spat on shell or seed. These spat can be used for a variety of purposes including growing for grow out planting or for the half shell market.
